Golden Krust is a franchise for a bakery with a Caribbean theme.It was first a store opened by Ephraim and Mavis Hawthorne in St. Andrew, Jamaica. In 1989, Lowell, Lorna, and four of his brothers and sisters and their husbands and wives, gathered all their resources to open the first retail location on Golden Krust on East Gun Hill Road in Bronx, New York.

The business became successful that they decided to open it to franchising in 1996. That same year, they opened their manufacturing plant in the Bronx. Their first ever franchise was opened in 1997. They started offering their combo meals in 2002. The 50th location on Golden Krust was opened in 2003. Their 100th location was opened in 2005. In 2006, they launched their charitable arm as Mavis and Ephraim Hawthorne Golden Krust Foundation. In 2009, they celebrated their 20 years of success and on that same year, they opened their first airport location.

What is on the menu at the Golden Krust?

Their Reggaefest Combos include the beef and chicken patty combo, whole fish combo, jerk chicken combo, stew chicken combo, curried goat combo, braised oxtail combo, curried chicken combo, jerk fish combo, and sliced fish combo. For the sides, they have the festival, dumpling, rice and peas, fried plantains, tofu sautéed in vegetables, steamed vegetables, and white rice. New to their menu is the jerk chicken sandwich that comes with different patties like Chee-Zee beef patty, cocktail patties, chicken patty, Krust, jerk chicken patty, shrimp patty, mild beef patty, spicy beef patty, soya patty, and vegetable patty. For soups and salads, they have the jerk chicken salad and the soup of the day. Sandwiches and wraps includes jerk chicken wrap, spinach wrap, jerk chicken sandwich, and jerk fish sandwich. For breakfast, they have kidney, callaloo and cod fish, and porridge. They also have a range of choices in pastry like bun and cheese, bulla cakes, coco bread, carrot cake, duck bread, hard dough bread, gizzard, round bun, rock cake, sliced cakes, rum cake or fruit cake, spice bun, tutti frutti, sugar bun, and wheat bread.

Cost and requirements on running a Golden Krust franchise

You need to have a net worth of $300,000 to $500,000 and a total liquid asset of at least $120,000 to $150,000. Expect to be investing about $173,000 to $564,000. The Golden Krust franchise fee is $15,000 to $25,000 with an on-going royalty fee of 3%. This is for a renewable 10 year term agreement. You will need about eight employees to run one location. They require experience in marketing and organization. They allow multi-unit ownership and absentee ownership.

What is included in the franchise package?

There will be one week training at the headquarters, one week at your location and another one week at an existing location. There will be assistance in site selection and design from their partners. They also have partners in construction who can help you get low rates but you are still free to choose your own. You will be assisted in finding the right equipment to purchase or lease. They have leasing company partners but you are still free to choose your own. You will be provided assistance in the initial inventory, start-up marketing, and hiring and training staff. For marketing support, there will be ad slicks, co-op advertising, regional marketing, and national media.
