Super 8 is a franchise for a budget hotel. It was founded in 1972 and started franchising in 1976.
It was founded by Dennis Brown and Ron Rivett in 1972. Their original room rate was $8.88 which is where they got their name. The first Super 8 was opened in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1974. It had 60 rooms and still operational up to now with the name “Aberdeen Super 8 East”. They introduced the VIP club which is a frequent traveller program in 1976.
It became popular that they have 7.6 million members. Hospitality Franchise Systems bought out the program and in 1993, it became Cendant. They stopped offering this program in December 2003 due to being purchased by Wyndham Hotels Group and replaced the program with TripRewards. In 2008, it was renamed as Wyndham Rewards.
Their competitors include Red Roof Inn, Econo Lodge, Motel 6, and Budget Host. Under Wyndham Hotels Group, they also have Baymont Inn and Suites, Wyndham Grand Collection, Ramada, Travelodge, Knights Inn, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham, Microtel, Howard Johnson, Days Inn, Dream Hotels, Planet Hollywood, and Wyndham Garden. There is also the Wyndham Vacation Ownership and the Wyndham Exchange and Rentals. Super 8 now has 1,850 locations in the United States, 129 in Canada and 206 in other countries.

They offer shuttle services to and from the airport, 24 hour front desk, Pride of Super 8, free wireless high speed internet, outdoor swimming pool, hair dryers, non-smoking rooms, tours, AAA approved, clock radio, iron and ironing boards, free Super Start Breakfast, coin operated guest laundry, and a 25 inch TV.

Expect to be investing about $178,000 to $3,573,000. The cost of Super 8 franchise fee is $25,000 to $26,500 with an on-going royalty fee of 5.5%. This is for a 20 year term agreement.
What is included in the franchise package?
There will be five days training at the headquarters, two days at your location, regional workshops, and customized training that can last about one to three days. You will be receiving newsletters and a toll free phone number. You will be given access to the internet and to purchasing cooperatives. Expect to be attending meetings and receiving occasional field evaluations. For marketing support, there will be national media through radio, television, print, online campaigns, social media, direct marketing such as email campaigns, and national public relations.
