Choice Hotels International is a franchise that owns a number of hotel brands. The hotel brands under Choice Hotels International are Comfort Inn, Quality, Comfort Suites, Clarion, Sleep Inn, Mainstay Suites, Cambria Suites, Econolodge, Suburban, Rodeway Inn and Ascend Collection.

It was founded in 1939 in Maryland by a group of motel owners. It used to be called Quality Courts United. It became Quality Motels in 1969 then changed to Quality Inns in 1972. They started franchising in 1962. It was changed to Quality International in 1972. There were about 300 hotels then.

They changed it to Quality Royale to compete with mid-priced hotels. Quality Royale was changed to Clarion Hotels in 1987. It became a full service hotel with complete amenities such as lounges, room service, conference centers, full service restaurants, and banquets. Clarion was then changed to the now Ascend Collection. During the 1990’s, they Comfort Suites and Quality Suites were introduced. Sleep Inn was introduced in 1989. In 1990, they changed their name to Choice Hotels International. They are planning on rebranding in 2012 to show public spaces and boutique inspired rooms. They again grew in 1997 introducing Mainstay Suites for extended stays. At this time, they also started offering the Choice Privileges frequent guest loyalty program. In 2005, they started introducing upscale suites as Cambria Suites. The first one was opened in 2007 in Boise, Idaho.
