Wyndham Hotels and Resorts Franchise Information

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts is a franchise for a hotel and resorts chain. It was founded in 1981 and started franchising in 1996. It was founded by Trammell Crow in Dallas, Texas.

He is the president of Trammell Crow Company or TCC. It appears that the company was named after Wyndham Robertson who once wrote for Fortune Magazine on the profile of Trammell Crow.

As they grew, they merged with Patriot American Hospitality or PAH. It was in the 1990’s that the company grew fast while acquiring hotels and renaming it Wyndhams. When they wanted to expand in the upscale limited-serviced hotels, they purchased the Summerfield Hotel Corporation and changed its name to Summerfield Suites by Wyndham.

They also have the Wyndham Garden Hotels which are smaller but usually offer full service and located in airports and the suburban. After the merging of two companies, they launched the Grand Bay Hotels and Resorts which did not last too long and The Great Eastern Hotel that was in London, England. In 1999, the company went through a restructuring with the help of private equity firms such as Apollo Real Estate Advisors and Thomas H. Lee Partners. They took control of the company and renamed it to Wyndham International. They struggled and had to sell off many of their hotels including many of the Summerfield Suites hotels that were sold to the Intercontinental Hotels Groups.

The affiliates of Blackstone Group acquired Wyndham International in 2005 and rebranded the hotels. Cendant purchased Wyndham Garden Hotels and Wyndham. In 2006, Wyndham Worldwide bought out Cendant. The hotels under Wyndham Worldwide includes Days Inn, Baymont Inns and Suites, Knights Inn, Howard Johnson’s, Super 8, Ramada, Wyndham, Travelodge, Hawthorn Suites, Wyndham Garden Hotels, Wyndham Vacation Resorts, Wingate by Wyndham, and WorldMark by Wyndham. Now, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts have the Wyndham Grand Collection, Wyndham Garden, Dream Hotels, and Night Hotels. They now have 67 locations in the United States and 27 locations in other countries.
