Wag-A-Lot is a franchise for a pet care business. It was founded by Craig Koch in 1999. Craig was a graduate of Wake Forest and he adopted a dog named Schmoo who was inspiration in putting up Wag-A-Lot.

Craig opened the first Wag-A-Lot location in Metro Atlanta township of Avondale Estates, Georgia in November of 1999. The business quickly grew and he decided to expand. They moved to Decatur, Georgia in a 13,000 square foot facility. He gave the old facility to Lifeline Animal Project Dog House, a non-profit organization, and donated over $50,000 worth of their old equipment. In 2005, he opened 2 more locations and then in 2009, he opened the business to franchising. They have been featured in different medias like the Atlanta Magazine, Entrepreneur, CNN Business Profile, FOX Atlanta, Animal Planet, HGTV, ABC News, CBS 46, and the Atlanta Journal.

What services do Wag-a-lot offer?

They offer boarding where your dog will stay in a “Zen Den” and with an option to add Ice Cream Service. They will be served dog ice cream from petkoolers. For 7 days or less, it costs about $35 per dog and $21 for each additional dog. For 8 nights or more, it would be about $32 per dog and $19 for each additional dog. They also have day care services that starts at about $19 per day per dog or you can avail of their prepaid discount package that’s $190 for 1 dog for 10 visits.

For grooming services, they have packages like Suds, Suds Plus, The Schmoo, and Bring it on. You can also upgrade it and add the pearly whites, moisturizing, and shed less Packages starts at $22 and the add-ons starts at $10. If you want to do the washing yourself but don’t want the clean-up after, they have the dog wash option for only $15 for half an hour use of their dog wash facility inclusing the shampoos, blow dryers, towel, and brushes. They also have a gift shop, trainers, and affiliate adoption organizations such as Atlanta Animal Rescue Friends (AARF) and LAP Doghouse.

Costs and Requirements Associated with Running a Wag-A-Lot Franchise?

You need to have a net worth of $500,000 and a total liquid asset of at least $150,000. Expect to be investing about $554,000 to $850,000. Franchise fee is $35,000 with an on-going royalty fee of 6%. This is for a renewable 10 year term agreement.

What’s included in the franchise package?

You will be provided assistance in finding the perfect location, design and the construction. There will be 2 weeks training in classroom and hands on in another location while yours is being built. Besides the training, you will be provided the operations manual. You will also have an associate to help you out at your location during the first 5 days of your opening. For marketing, there’s co-op advertising, ad slicks, national and regional advertising. You may also expect occasional evaluations to track your progress.
