Smart Brain America is a franchise for a business providing education on Abacus Arithmetic.
It was founded in 2003 and started franchising in 2005. It was founded by Surendra & Brahashitha Gupta. Surendra Gupa is the current Chief Executive Officer and President while Brahashitha Gupta is D current Executive Director. The only program they offered when they opened in 2003 was teaching Abacus Arithmetic and the Right Brain Development.
Smart Brain America say that it took them time to formulate a franchise model that would work for them and the franchisees. It took two years until they were able to launch it in 2005. In 2008, they reformulated the Smart Brain America Abacus system and expanded in the after school programs. Included in this reformulation is the use of only one hand in manipulating the Abacus which also promotes the development of the synchronization of the left and right brain.
What exactly is the Abacus?
It is what some calls as the “counting frame”. They are made of bamboo frame and have sliding beads on wires. These are still being used in some part of Asia and Africa. It is used more in younger students to help them understand better the arithmetic and the numeral system.
What services and programs are they offering at the Smart Brain America?
First is the Abacus and Mental Arithmetic program. They focus on teaching the children on how to calculate problems in the head and at a speed that they can compete. This involves the development of the brain in reading comprehension, reading speed, reading accuracy, conceptualization, memory recall and recall speed, and writing skills. Next is the Smart Math Enrichment program that is conducted by certified teachers and helps children with Math for their grades in school and make them more comfortable with numbers. They also have the Smart Reading and Writing. This program focuses on punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure. Part of this program is addressing Essay Writing Skills wherein they provide a syllabus for their students to follow in creating a great essay. Another program is the Smart Test Prep program which aids students while they prepare for tests.
Cost and requirements on running a Smart Brain America franchise
You need to have a net worth of $150,000 and a total liquid asset of at least $20,000. Expect to be investing about $60,000 to $164,000. The cost of Smart Brain America franchise fee is $25,000 with an on-going royalty fee of $12 to $20 per student. This is for a renewable 10 year term agreement. You will need about two to four employees to run one location. They allow multi-unit ownership.
What is included in the franchise package?
There will be seven days training at the headquarters and two to three days at your location. You will be receiving newsletters and a toll free phone number. You will be given access to the internet and will be provided assistance at the grand opening. Expect to be attending meetings and receiving occasional field evaluations. For marketing support, there will be ad slicks, co-op advertising, and regional advertising.
