Farburger is a franchise for a fast food restaurant that specializes in hamburgers. It was founded in 1952 by Lovie Yancey in Los Angeles, California. Lovie Yancey used to serve these hamburgers to her guests and they were the ones who encouraged her to share her hamburgers to the world. She then opened what was initially named “Mr. Fatburger” in 1947. It became know to the customers as “The Last Great Hamburger Stand”. Lovie Yancey passed away in 2008. Fatburger’s parent company is Fog Cutter Capital Group.

The franchise has been present mainly in California until they expanded in North America in the 1990’s. They now have locations in other states like Arizona, Florida, Colorado, Illinois, Georgia, Mississippi, Maryland, Nevada, Nebraska, Ohio, Washington, and New Jersey. There are now 52 locations in the United States, nine in Canada, five in other countries like UAE, China, and Indonesia, and 31 locations that are company owned. In 2007, they were featured in Forbes Magazine entitled “Celebrities love Fatburger – Juicy Tale” and showed celebrities from Hollywood who have bought in to the fast food restaurant. In 2008, they opened their first location in a sports stadium, Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chase Field. They have had association with several celebrities who have partly owned Fatburgers like Magic Johnson, Montel Williams, E-40, Andrew Wiederhorn, Kanye West, Pharrell, and Willie Anderson. They have also been ranked number 275 in Franchise 500 in 2008.

What is on the menu at the Fatburger?

They have burgers such as the Fatburger which has pure lean beef on a toasted bun. This is available in five different sizes: baby fat (small), fatburger (medium), kingburger (large), double king (extra extra large), and triple king (extra extra extra large).  They also have crispy chicken sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, spicy chicken sandwich, veggieburger, and turkeyburger. You may add bacon, cheese, egg, and chilli to these burgers. For the sides, they have the chilli cup, homemade onion rings, skinny fries, fat fries, and chilli cheese fat fries. They also offer ice cream milkshakes in chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, cookies and cream, and Maui-banana. For sandwiches, they have the fat salad which comes with bacon and tomatoes, bacon and egg sandwich, chilli dog and hotdog.

Costs and requirements on running a Fatburger franchise

Expect to be investing about $504,000 to $881,000. The Fatburger  franchise fee is $50,000 with an on-going royalty fee of 6%. The term of agreement is not renewable.

What is included in the franchise package?

There will be a rigorous training that will include a comprehensive curriculum in restaurant management, restaurant operations, local marketing, safety and health, and site selection. You will also be provided with the training manual complete with everything from the curriculum. For architecture and design, you will be provided with a prototype plan that your architect can modify to fit location. This also includes guidelines on the design, signage, and other materials. You will be provided a list of equipment that you will need and you will be assisted in finding contractors and vendors.
