Famous Dave’s is a franchise for a barbecue restaurant. It was founded in 1994 and started franchising in 1998.
The company was founded b y Dave Anderson. He first worked as a philanthropist and he was helping businesses who were then struggling. He once put up a team who helped Lac Courte Oreilles Chippewa Reservation’s economy turned around. He spent two years helping businesses and tourism in Wisconsin. Dave earned a Master’s degree in Harvard University for Public Administration in 1986. He finally decided to fulfil his passion and opened the first Famous Dave’s in Hayward, Wisconsin.
What is on the menu at Famous Dave’s?
For appetizer, they have Dave’s Sampler Platter with spareribs, fried chicken tenders, onion strings, catfish fingers, and boneless wings. You can also order these separately. Their award winning ribs are hand rubbed with a secret blend, then, it is smoked for about three to four hours, slathered with sauce, and then flame-kissed on the grill. This is served with corn-on-the-cob, corn bread muffin and two sides of your choice. These ribs can be ordered either with four bones or regular, six bones or half slab, or twelve bones which is more known as “The Big Slab”. For their barbecue classics, they smoke the meat in sweet hickory fire for eight hours, rubbed in secret seasonings, and slather them with sauces. These are available as barbecue chicken, rib tips, chicken tenders, Sweetwater catfish, Georgia chopped pork, Texas beef brisket, barbecue or buffalo chicken wings, and country roast chicken. They say that they are famous for the All-American BBQ Feast with St. Louis style spareribs, 1/2 lb. of either Texas beef brisket or Georgia chopped pork, a whole chicken, Wilbur beans, famous fries, coleslaw, four corn bread muffins, and four corn-on-the-cobs. This is good for four to six people and also available as good for two to three people. For burgers, they have Devil’s Spit Burger, Char-Grilled Cheeseburger, Texas Manhandler, Cajun Chicken Sandwich, Ultimate BBQ Burger, and Dave’s Favourite Burger. If eating in is not enough for you, you can take home their bottled famous sauces like Rich & Sassy, Texas Pit, Devil’s Spit, Georgia Mustard, and Sweet & Zesty.
Costs and requirements on running a Famous Dave’s franchise
You need to have a net worth of $500,000 to $1,000,000. Expect to be investing about $630,000 to $4,226,000. The Famous Dave’s franchise fee is from $30,000 to $40,000 with an on-going royalty fee of 3% to 5%. This is for a renewable 20 year term agreement. You will need about 68 employees to run one location. They allow multi-unit ownership. They do not allow absentee ownership.
What is included in the franchise package?
There will be training for principals for a minimum of three days. For the director of operations, general manager, and kitchen manager, training will be for a minimum of 25 days. There will be assistance from Famous Dave’s in the opening for about 21 days. Operations and training manuals would also be provided. You will also receive written schedules of food supplies, a list of approved suppliers, and a list of designated suppliers. They will also provide you with advertising and marketing recommendations and a “Grand Opening Celebration” package. Basic business and accounting procedures will also be made available to you.
