Earl of Sandwich is a franchise for a restaurant which specializes in sandwiches. It was started by John Montagu, who is the current Earl of Sandwich, his son, Orlando Montagu, and Robert Earl who’s a businessman that founded Planet Hollywood.
The Montagu’s are direct descendants of the 4th Earl of Sandwich. In 1762 in Great Britain, the 4th Earl of Sandwich popularized the “sandwich” that we know now. The Earl of Sandwich restaurant’s headquarters is in Orlando, Florida in the United States. Their first restaurant was opened in Downtown Disney Marketplace within the Walt Disney World on March 19, 2004. The first franchised location was opened in Sugar Land, Texas and is owned by Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. About 11 other locations were opened in Texas, Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, and in Nevada. They say that the first location outside the United States is going to open in Disneyland Paris this year.
What’s on the menu at Earl of Sandwich?
They have two signature hot sandwiches: The Original 1762 which is a sandwich with freshly roasted beef, creamy horseradish sauce, and cheddar cheese; And The Full Montagu which is a sandwich with freshly roasted beef, aged swiss & sharp cheddar cheese, turkey, roma tomatoes, lettuce, and Earl’s mustard sauce. Other hot sandwiches are Caribbean Jerk Chicken, Tuna Melt, Hawaiian BBQ, Caprese, Ham n’ Swiss and a special sandwich just for kids with either roasted turkey and swiss, pizza sandwich, grilled cheese, or peanut butter and jelly. Fresh tossed salads and wraps are available in Mediterranean Salad, The Earl’s Cobb, Chinese Chicken Salad, Chicken Caesar, and Caprese Salad. On the side, you can have The Earl’s Slaw, Pasta Salad, Potato Salad, Tomato Soup, Fresh Fruit Yogurt Parfaits, muffins, or Earl of Sandwich Kettle Cooked Chips in Original, Mesquite BBQ, and Sea Salt & Vinegar. The chips can also be bought in sealed bags. For desserts, they have freshly baked goods like Brownie Creme Sandwiches, Triple Chocolate Brownies, Mini Cookie Bites, and Triple Chocolate Brownie Bites.
They also offer The Earl’s Coffee in Kona Blend, Dark Roast, and Kona Blend Decaf. If you prefer to drink something cold, they have smoothies in Strawberry Banana, Mocha Latte, 3 Berry, Hawaiian, Chocolate Banana, and Frozen Latte. The Earl of Sandwich also does big servings for catering purposes.
Costs and Requirements Associated with Running an Earl of Sandwich Franchise
You need to have a net worth of at least $750,000-$2,000,000 and a total liquid asset of at least $300,000-$800,000 depending on whether you are franchising 1, 5, or 10 locations. Expect to be investing about $375,000-$400,000 per unit. Franchise fee is $25,000 with an on-going royalty fee of 6%.
What’s included in the franchise package?
There will be a comprehensive initial training for the owner and management team for 3 weeks at the headquarters. There would also be on-site training. For site selection, they have a program designed in reviewing and analyzing locations with its mapping technology. They have approved architects that will assist you in the design and in bidding for a contractor. There will also be assistance before you open your location. You may expect occasional visits to be checking on your progress. For marketing, they have in-store marketing and point-of-sale materials.
